What Goes Up Must Come Down

Painted during the 2025 Christmas season, this tree is a testament to the excitement and whirl of the Christmas period and also to the eventual comedown that follows the 25th December. A christmas tree is bedecked with lights, tinsel and ornaments. We can see from the background that the painting takes place in the night, lending a solitary air. This painting, like the Arnolfini Portrait in the National Gallery, is also a concealed portrait - the painter and his easel are reflected in the large green central bauble.
