The theme of Forests brings together works by three artists who use nature as a means of expression and a space for experimentation.

During the week they will be joined by writers and musicians for special events.

Daisy Millner is a visual artist living in London. Her imagined landscapes are drawn from film, photographs and sketches, finding romance in the everyday.

The colours of her work are inspired by medieval decorative arts.

The pictures here evolved from drawing in Sherwood Forest with Mary Millner, where they sketched oak trees over 1,000 years old. Daisy looks at their anthropomorphic shapes, and imagines a dance through the decades.

Phoebe Cope is an Irish painter living in the Scottish Borders. Her landscapes contain the full Earth story: drawing from the land, the seasons and the living world around her. She works in oils on linen, sanguine chalk and stone.

Mary Millner is a London-based artist whose archival research led her to medieval Robin Hoods and ancient Forest folklore.

Millner’s paintings make space for imaginings; along the unknown trails the giant oaks lead the viewer to join May Day dances, highway robbers and hunting parties.

Small oil boards capture the moment, larger paintings distill knowledge, while her studio is thronged with many more works that bring the forest close around her.
