The View From The Inside

Painted from a house in Leeds the artist formerly lived in, The View From The Inside is an almost anti-landscape picture. Half of the frame is taken up with a plain white wall, deliberately marginalising what little view we are given in a punning reappropriation of the language of abstraction. Meanwhile, the inverted Neighbourhood Watch sticker and blinds affixed to the window lend the atmosphere of a prison, slicing and bisecting the urban vista - itself similar windows from which to look out of. This painting was the culmination of a project started a few years earlier, documenting from life the boundaries and territories of domestic life.
