Picture of an Ornament

Aaron Jolley has an interest in a particular type of ornament, as we see elsewhere in his pictures of Toby Jugs and toy dinosaurs. Here, a typical ceramic staffordshire dog is transformed. The close-up nature of the picture makes the nature of what we are seeing - is this a real dog? If it weren’t for the title, It’d be ambiguous. The dog’s gaze is fixed, unblinking. Here an everyday object, seen from a weird angle, becomes totemic.
