Commemoration of Something Important (The Unremarkable Day Plate)

Indicative of a confessional and auto-biographical vent in Jolley’s output, The Unremarkable Day Plate is, as it’s two joking and contradictory titles suggest, a monument to insignificance. The plate, which borrows from examples of traditional plate-making found in Cambridge’s Fitzwilliam Museum, records the first day that the artist enjoyed his garden this year - but in so doing contrasts this personally significant event against a wider social and historical context.
