A Second Flower Painting (Dead Stems)

Everyday Extraordinary reunites two of Jolley’s flower paintings from his Leeds-based era. Here, the second of his flower paintings, we see the dead stems of previously healthy plants. Providing a counterpoint to the sister painting, where the flowers look proud in their vase, this picture speaks to the beauty in the stems and their afterlife. In a way it is a painting about change and metamorphosis, it’s an avowing of the often discarded beauty the flowers hold after they’ve dried and wilted.
