A rider has pulled off the road and into the cool of a roadside bar. Cap turned back, sunglasses parked on the peak, a croissant on the plate and a drink already poured — and his bike propped against the table beside him, still ready to go. Kronenbourg and Jupiler signs hang on the wall alongside a Paris–Roubaix poster and a Chat Noir print reading Bonjour Mon Amour. Through the open shutters, framed by a line of poplars, another rider is still out there, still riding past.
Keith Bird catches the exact texture of a stolen rest — the pleasure of it, and the very slight guilt. It is a painting about the café stop as the true heart of cycling, and it is quietly, warmly funny.
