Dead Daffodils
Dead Daffodils
Like many flower paintings, Jolley’s Dead Daffodils is a reminder of temporary beauty. Influenced like so many by David Hockney, here the artist takes on one of Hockney’s biggest themes - The Arrival of Spring. Started in the first week of March 2026, the painting shows in detail a bowl of wilting daffodils. Careful attention is given to the ribbed, transparent texture of the glass vase and the distorting properties of the water inside, another key Hockney theme. While a loving tribute, the painting does not try to replicate the Hockney style - instead it is rooted in the artist’s own observances of his subject. In the background, the depiction of a radiator and his family’s wallpaper make for a punning approximation of 1960s abstract colour-field painting.
